Cabinet Care

Although cabinets and finish look phenomenal once they’re freshly installed, wood is a natural element and requires regular care. Read through these recommendations and tips to learn how to keep your cabinets looking their best.

Frequency of Cleaning

Wiping down cabinets every week or two is an ideal time frame and cuts down on the need for deeper cleaning. However, a deep cleaning should still be done every few months.

Clean up any spills as soon as possible with a damp cloth in order to prevent residue from building up. The longer a substance stays on a surface, the more likely deep stains or damage may appear.

Cleaning the Exterior

With a slightly dampened cloth, wipe the exterior of the cabinets and promptly wipe dry. Start from the top and work your way down. A soft cloth, rag, or standard duster work best.

To remove grease, oil, and spills, wipe with a solution of mild soap and water, then dry the cabinets right after with a soft cloth.

When cleaning glass or mirror faced cabinets, use a commercial glass cleaner. Spray the cleaner onto a clean rag and then wipe down the surface. Avoid spraying the glass directly, since the residue can seep into the cabinets and cause discoloration and damage to the finish.

Finally, don’t forget to wipe down the hardware.

Cleaning the Interior

It’s important to deep clean the interior of cabinets every few months. Having to empty out every cabinet may seem like an overwhelming task, but approaching one cabinet and one room at a time helps break up the job into smaller and easier tasks to accomplish. Remove all items - such as utensils, silverware and clothes - and place them on the side. If crumbs or excessive dust is present, vacuum the inside. With a slightly dampened warm cloth and mild detergent, wipe the interior, starting from the back and moving your way forward. Rinse and dry with another cloth, making sure no moisture is left. Regular deep cleaning will leave your cabinets sanitary, safe, and beautiful.

What to Avoid

  • Heat: Cabinet surfaces are prone to damage with intense heat, so it’s best to keep heat-producing appliances - such as toasters, coffee makers, and kettles - away from cabinets.

  • Excessive moisture: It’s important to keep cabinets dry. Pay close attention to areas where water is common, such as the sink or dishwasher, and wipe off any extra water or detergents.

  • Abrasives: Materials such as dishcloths, sponges, and powdered cleaners may penetrate and damage the surface. Ammonia-based cleaners and soaps with dye should be avoided as well.

  • Waxes: Self-polishing waxes (especially those that contain silicone) and furniture polish are not suited for wooden cabinets.

Cabinets are only as good as the care they receive. With any wooden product, appropriate maintenance and attention need to be given in order to preserve the top notch look and quality for years to come.
